At the end of June 2024, one of our projects in Honduras was successfully completed across 47 schools. The aim was to facilitate school attendance for children and adolescents in difficult living conditions in the Central District. Many of them live in conflict-ridden and violent environments, which negatively impacts their academic performance and development.
A campaign to increase school registrations ensured that more children gained access to education. A total of 4744 sets of school materials and 500 sets of teaching materials were distributed. Eleven trained tutors from universities helped 441 children with learning difficulties to improve their performance. Today, these children attend school more motivated. Additionally, 1020 children were supported by their teachers using the "Learning Bridges" method. All children in the 47 schools received free school uniforms, which provided significant financial relief for their parents.
Moreover, psychosocial support was offered in the schools. Over 17 days, art courses, games, activities on violence prevention, and self-awareness were provided in 11 educational institutions, alongside counselling sessions for children and parents. A total of 3103 children (1546 girls and 1557 boys) benefited from these activities. During these days, students also had access to free health services. A total of 4298 children received vaccinations, nutritional advice, vitamin supplements, as well as eye and dental treatments.
One father expressed his immense gratitude for the support: “The school sets, uniform and vaccinations were very helpful, as they provided us with significant financial relief. The lectures and all the other activities were great too. They help us save time and educate ourselves further.”
Additionally, 500 teachers (416 women and 84 men) from 34 schools were trained in the protection against sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment. Informational materials on child protection were prominently displayed in the schools.
The project was conducted in partnership with Unicef Honduras and our long-term partner organisation, Alternativas y Oportunidades (AyO), in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education. We are pleased to report that the expected results were even exceeded.
