Female composers at work

Zurich Vocalists

The female composers are at work: the Zurich Vocalists are dedicating themselves to the a cappella choral music of women, both past and almost forgotten. Works by Hildegard von Bingen, Fanny Hensel, Renate Stivrina, Lea Morris and other female composers are the focus of this sonorous concert.

Despite facing much resistance, women have made significant contributions to choral music throughout the ages. However, many of their works remained undiscovered for a long time or had to be published under pseudonyms. Fanny Hensel (1805-1847) is a striking example: only a portion of her extensive compositional oeuvre has been published to date, while her brother Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy received great recognition during his lifetime.

The concert invites you to discover the diversity and expressiveness of female choral music – from historical compositions to contemporary works.
